The month of December brings the close of one year and the promise and possibilities of a new one lying just ahead. For Coffeebar, 2011 was an amazing year! We just celebrated our first “birthday” in October, and already we’ve received incredible support and recognition from our community. We wanted to take a moment to reflect on that recognition and our achievements, and share with all of you our gratitude for the support we have received.
This summer, Coffeebar was recognized in several categories of the Sierra Sun‘s 2011 Best of North Tahoe & Truckee Contest. Coffeebar was awarded first place in the “Best Espresso/Coffee” category. Greg Buchheister also won second place in the “Best Barista” category, while Coffeebar took home third place honors in the “Best Ice Cream” category (for our fresh home-made gelato), and the “Best Bakery” category (check out a list of our various baked goods, made fresh in-house each day). This contest is based solely on community votes, so our recognition is thanks to you, our customers, who took the time to vote for us. We appreciate it!
Just a few weeks later, in September, Sierra Sun again recognized Coffeebar, this time in its “Meet Your Merchant” section. Check out the story here!
Most recently, Coffeebar was honored to be awarded “Best New Business in Truckee” by the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce, alongside numerous other incredible local organizations garnering recognition at the Chamber’s annual awards night. This award is incredibly important to us, because it as a symbol of our place in the community. We are immensely honored and grateful to be recognized as a business that our community members rely on, again and again, for a consistently quality experience. We appreciate you all making us a part of your daily life and routine, and we have truly loved having you be a part of ours.
But your support of Coffeebar goes beyond just boosting our own morale and sense of community. In fact, it strengthens our community as a whole, in numerous ways. By dedicating yourself to shopping locally, and shopping small, at not only Coffeebar but other independent businesses in our area, you are helping bolster our local economy and provide jobs for our residents. The impact is in fact significant.
According to a national statistic from the group Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), for every $100 spent locally, $68 of it stays in the local economy, compared to $43 for every $100 spent at chain stores. And money that remains circulating locally not only stimulates our local economy, but helps support our community’s schools, social services, local infrastructure and more.
According to a report released this month by the New Economy Working Group, locally owned businesses are the “real engines of job creation.” “Locally owned and rooted in community,” the report states, local businesses “have the flexibility and the incentive to respond to the 21st century imperatives for justice and environmental sustainability.”
“They provide the foundation on which the New Economy can be built…”
So thank you, to each of our customers, for doing your part to support our community by supporting local businesses. And we encourage you, as the holidays approach, to continue to prioritize our community — because it is absolutely awesome!
